Dr. Joseph Dynlacht, a U.S. radiation biologist and a professor at Indiana University, chats to Jolanta Wolska.

What brings you to Warsaw?
I came for an International Congress of Radiation Research at the Palace of Science and Culture, and also to find any relatives of the woman who hid my dad from the Germans during World War II.

And did you have any luck?
The Jewish Historical Institute was very helpful and thanks to them I connected with the grandson. I was very concerned that either I wouldn’t find him or that he would not be interested in meeting me. The meeting exceeded my deepest dreams. He was so generous with information and very warm. I would like to do something tangible to show my family’s appreciation.

What was the most striking feature of Warsaw for you?
The warmth and patience of the people, both young and old, especially their attempts to understand my feeble attempts at speaking a few words in Polish that I tried to learn before I came here. People are so friendly here, much like the folks in rural America. I feel it is a very safe city as well. It is a very green city.

Given the poor global economic climate, I was surprised to see so much vitality and development in Warsaw. The mix of old and new is very charming.

Did you have problems getting around Warsaw?
Oh no. Warsaw seems to have a very good public transport system, much better than in the U.S. The taxi drivers are helpful. Many people speak English here and in many restaurants the menu is also in English. The service is great and so is Polish food and very reasonably priced.
