The award-winning The City of Ruins film, a digital reconstruction that starkly depicts the devastation caused in Warsaw by World War II, is now available on Blu-ray.

Running at over five minutes, The City of Ruins is a simulated view from an airplane flying over a destroyed and depopulated Warsaw in the spring of 1945. The film, which has been shown at the Warsaw Uprising Museum since Aug. 1, 2010, is based on World War II-era photographs. It delivers a suggestive sense of dread as it depicts the massive destruction of Warsaw after World War II. The Platige Image studio, which made the video for the museum, spent over two years working on it and had to build a 3D model of Warsaw with 65,000 objects placed on it by hand.

“Unless you have seen this with your own eyes, you won’t get the idea by just looking at individual photographs from World War II,” Jan O³dakowski, the director of the Warsaw Uprising Museum, said during a ceremony held to mark the release of the film. “Only when you see it directly on film can you realize what Warsaw really looked like after the war ended and the ruins it had to rise from.”

Since it was first shown, the 3D film has been seen by 300,000 viewers in the museum’s only screening room.

Last year, The City of Ruins received the silver Muse Award from the American Association of Museums and it was also nominated for the Visual Effects Society award for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Special Venue Project. The film has been shown at festivals in Argentina, Israel, Russia and the United States and at the 26th Warsaw Film Festival.

The Blu-ray release includes a map case which comes with historical commentary in Polish and English.
