The Medeski-Martin-Wood trio from the United States, also known simply as MMW, blend acid jazz, fusion and jazz avant-garde, cemented by impulsive funk and energetic hip hop. They play the next concert in the Jazz Era series. The trio are John Medeski (keyboard and piano), Billy Martin (drums and percussion) and Chris Wood (double bass and bass guitar).

Dionizy Pi±tkowski, the director of Jazz Era, describes Medeski-Martin-Wood as one of the most popular jazz bands of the past several years. “The trio play jazz which blends fusion, modern jazz and trendy avant-garde,” Pi±tkowski said. “Apart from their own compositions, MMW play jazz standards and bold interpretations of other things they like to play. They rose to prominence playing a lot of concerts at clubs and going on tours which spanned several months, with dates at small American clubs along with prestigious concert venues in Europe and Japan. Readers and critics of Down Beat magazine have voted MMW one of the most important nu-jazz bands.”

MMW got together in the spring of 1991 in Brooklyn, New York. MMW’s albums were a promise of a new decade in jazz. By the mid-1990s, they were established as a trendy band playing major festivals in the United States.

The band leader is pianist and Hammond organ virtuoso Medeski who also plays other keyboards, including the grand piano, melodica, mellotron, the Wurlitzer electric piano and organ and the Moog Voyager and Yamaha synthesizers. Widely regarded as a veteran of New York’s avant-garde scene, Medeski also plays with The Wood Brothers folk blues band which consists of the MMW members and Chris Wood’s brother Oliver.

The American press has named MMW the most important nu-jazz act of the past several decades.
