Portishead Jazz
April 26, 2012
Article's tools:

Get the Blessing is a British side project made up of members of trip hop bands Portishead and Goldfrapp, and they’re performing in May as part of the Era Jazzu (Jazz Era) series. Get the Blessing consists of Goldfrapp percussionist Daisy Palmer, Portishead bassist Jim Barr, trumpeter Pete Judge and saxophonist Jake McMurchie, who has also played with Portishead.

Portishead have created their own inimitable sound by mixing hip hop with jazz, electronic, acid, house, and even classical music. They made their first Polish appearance at the 2011 Malta Festival in Poznań, where they blew away a crowd numbering in the tens of thousands.

“Era Jazzu has never seen such an amazingly promising outfit”, says Dionizy Pi±tkowski of Era Jazzu. “What underpins the success of Get the Blessing is their combination of their fascination with trip hop, electronica and jazz improvisation.”

The “Portishead Jazz” project has become a force to be reckoned with on the European jazz scene. The band is starting to appear at major festivals around the world and is taking to the stage at important jazz events. Listeners and critics alike sat up and took notice when All is Yes, the debut album of Portishead bassist Jim Barr, the group’s guitarist Adrian Utley and percussionist Clive Deamer, came out in 2008. Electronica and rock sounds were enriched with a touch of (electronically modulated) jazz trumpet and sax to create a heady mix that couldn’t help but draw the listener in. The album won the BBC Jazz Awards that year and catapulted Get the Blessing into the upper echelons of British jazz.

The group’s latest offering, OC DC, is minus Clive Deamer, who was busy playing sessions for Radiohead at the time. Deamer recommended Daisy Palmer step into the breach for Get the Blessing. Palmer plays for electronic trip hop supremos Goldfrapp. Legendary progressive and jazz rock pioneer Robert Wyatt (Soft Machine) also features on the album. The album is being enthusiastically received all over the continent and the material is getting a good workout on this spring concert tour.
