May you live in interesting times, says an ancient curse… For my generation this saying has a more positive overtone. Interesting times are times of change. The deeper and more fundamental the change, the more interesting the times. If the change is from worse to better, then where’s the curse?

Eight years ago Poland joined the European Union. Don’t worry, I won’t delve too deeply into the past, I’ll only go back to the moment when we had to convince the countries of the Community they would find it worthwhile. Then a sufficiently large group of Polish people had to be convinced of the same thing, so there would be more of them than of the unwilling, the doubtful or the scared.

Eight years later - a time as good as any - we can try to offer a little summary. I think it’s a fully positive one, for the EU itself, for its old members and for the novices who are no longer novices today. It’s a good time for an honest summary because the EU is struggling with more than just a financial crisis but above all with the result of this - an identity crisis in the Community. I don’t think that we made a mistake in joining the EU, or that the EU made a mistake in accepting our application.

It is my great pleasure to publish an exclusive interview with Günter Verheugen in this issue of The Warsaw Voice; he was the EU’s commissioner for enlargement during the years of our efforts to join. I am all the more pleased that neither of us has any doubts—joining the EU was the right decision.
