Warsaw is a great city for shoppers, having transformed virtually beyond recognition since the communist era when most goods were hard to come by and stores offered little other than empty shelves. Over the past two decades, a number of new and elegant shopping malls have sprung up around the city. They are home to popular Polish and international brands. Here is a brief roundup of the city’s hottest malls.


Arkadia

Opened in 2004, Arkadia is the largest shopping mall in Poland, at 287,000 square meters of retail space and over 21 million visitors a year. It houses a long list of high-profile stores with Polish and international brands, elegant restaurants and cafes, a multiplex and a health center. The 230 retailers at Arkadia include 180 stores, 20 service shops and 30 restaurants and cafes.

A distinctive feature of Arkadia is that clothes stores occupy almost the entire second floor with a selection of brands that cater to buyers ranging from adolescents to entire families to fans of designer clothes. The second floor also houses the food court, a clinic, and a fitness club.

Blue City

The Blue City complex has a large retail section with over 230 stores and service shops, including a delicatessen operated by Polish retailer Piotr i Paweł, with food products from all over the world, and one of Poland’s largest Saturn consumer electronics markets selling a wide range of multimedia, audiovisual equipment and household appliances on two floors. The Blue City also includes the Magic City section, which comprises a theme park for kids, a nightclub and disco, a fitness club and nine squash courts. Visitors to the mall can also entertain themselves at a go-cart center. The centerpiece of Blue City is a spectacular fountain whose main jet shoots up to 26 meters.

The Promenada shopping mall is in Warsaw’s Praga district on the eastern bank of the Vistula River. Opened in 1996, the mall has 53,500 sq m of retail space, with 265 stores. The mall’s parking lot can accommodate 1,741 cars.
