Giant Football in Warsaw
May 31, 2012
Article's tools:

This year marks 50 years since Poland and Pakistan established diplomatic relations and since the anniversary coincides with the Euro 2012 soccer championships, the embassy of Pakistan has decided to help local soccer fans show their support for Poland’s national team.

Pakistan is one of the world’s largest producers of hand-sewn balls used in sports, accounting for 70 percent of hand-sewn balls marketed around the world. On May 14, the embassy of Pakistan placed a gigantic soccer ball on the corner of Karowa and Krakowskie Przedmie¶cie streets in downtown Warsaw for locals and visitors to sign and write words of support for the Polish team. The ball will stay at the site for several weeks, after which it will be taken to the Museum of Sports and Tourism as a reminder of the Euro 2012 championships.

Pakistan’s ambassador to Poland, Murad Ali, was the first to sign the huge ball. He said it was hand-sewn by skilled craftsmen in Pakistan. “The manufacturing process is a painstaking one and takes a lot of concentration at each production phase,” he said. “After the ball was designed, the 32 pieces were hand-painted and then sewn together.”
