New French Ambassador in Warsaw

Pierre Buhler has taken over as the new French ambassador to Poland. He is a graduate of economic studies at the École des Hautes Études Commerciales (HEC) international business school. He studied political science at the Sciences Po institute in Paris and studied Polish at the French National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO). He also holds a bachelor’s degree in ethnology (Jussieu) and law (Panthéon) and a postgraduate certificate in applied economics (Paris-Dauphine).

Having graduated from the prestigious ENA national school of public administration, Buhler joined the diplomatic corps in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1982. In 1982-83, he was a member of the French delegation to the Conference for Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), then worked at the French embassies in Warsaw (1983-1985) and Moscow (1985-1988). In 1988, he was appointed to the ministry’s Directorate of Political Affairs. In 1993, he started a term as first counselor of the French embassy in Washington, D.C., during which time he was a member of the French delegation during the Dayton peace negotiations concerning the Balkan region (November 1995).

In 2001-2002, Buhler was diplomatic adviser to French Defense Minister Alain Richard and then in 2002, he was the secretary-general of the 10th Ambassadors’ Conference. He was later appointed an associate professor of political science at the Sciences Po institute in Paris. Specializing in international relations, he held the position between 2002 and 2006.

Appointed French ambassador to Singapore in 2006, Buhler headed the embassy until 2009, after which he became director general of the France Coopération Internationale development agency.

Buhler is the author of a book entitled Histoire de la Pologne communiste; autopsie d’une imposture, published in Poland under the title Polska Droga do Wolno¶ci (Poland’s Road to Freedom.)

He is a knight of the French Order of Merit and the Legion of Honor. In 2010, the European Solidarity Center awarded him its Medal of Gratitude.

Apart from his native French, he speaks English, German, Polish and Russian.
