Sailing with an Olympic Champion

The new Mila Club in the village of Zegrzynek, picturesquely located by Lake Zegrzyńskie, 35 kilometers north of central Warsaw, is all about sailing fun. The club is a branch of the Kusznierewicz Academy, founded and co-owned by Mateusz Kusznierewicz, a many-time world and European sailing champion and a gold and bronze Olympic medal winner.

Kusznierewicz has set up and promoted many educational projects for children and young adults. He came up with the idea for the Academy as a sailing school for both those who have long been keen sailors and those who would like to start practicing the sport. He chose Lake Zegrzyńskie as the location because that was where his lifelong adventure with sailing began in his childhood.

“When I was nine in 1984, my mother signed me up for a sailing camp here on Lake Zegrzyńskie,” Kusznierewicz said May 26 during at the Mila Club opening ceremony. “Who would have thought that after all these years, I would be standing here as a holder of the magnificent titles of Polish, European and world champion and with a gold Olympic medal to my name? I’m happy to be back. I hope that our project will help sailing develop as a sport and become more popular.”

Kusznierewicz opened the sports and recreation center at the Mila Club to share his passion and expertise with others. Together with staff he picked himself, Kusznierewicz will use new Sigma Club yachts to organize sailing trips, training, races, classes and camps for children and adolescents.

“I want to take advantage of the fact that a gold Olympic medal draws people’s attention and that’s why I take part in numerous educational projects for children,” Kusznierewicz said. “Here at the Kusznierewicz Academy we have started a project called ‘Ride the Wave with Kusznierewicz’ and designed for school students in Mazovia province. We invite them to attend classes at the Academy free of charge, hoping that these will get young people into sailing.”

Other than sport and sailing fans, the Mila Club is the right spot for those who like to relax out in the open. It has accommodation for over 120 people, two conference rooms, a restaurant, a Captain’s Club, a sauna, a barbecue, space for a campfire and a parking lot.
