Street Art in Warsaw

Famous theater troupes from Poland and abroad are descending on Warsaw this summer to take part in the 20th International Street Art Festival on the weekends of July 7-8 and 13-15.

This year’s festival performances will be staged on Zamkowy Square, New Town Square, the square near the Słodowiec metro station and in Agrykola Park.

First held in 1993, every year the International Street Art Festival draws thousands of viewers who come to see hundreds of performers. This year’s guests include the Divadlo Kvelb theater from the Czech Republic which will stage a comedy entitled Kaspar Rek. The performance is a non-verbal grand acrobatic extravaganza featuring puppets, stilts, fire and live music. Kryly Halopa, one of a few independent, alternative theaters in Belarus, is coming to Warsaw with a play entitled Dzwonićlecieć (Ringingflying) and consisting of absurdist scenes set in 1930s Leningrad—a comment on the gloomy reality of living in present-day Belarus.

Warsaw audiences are familiar with the Stranstvuyushchiye kukly Gospodina Pezho (The Wandering Puppets of Mr. Pezho) theater of masks, grotesque and over-the-top antics from Russia which this year is bringing Circus Mutabor, a colorful show combining several street theater genres, including standup comedy, circus and masquerade. The Russian performers will use their signature accessories, that is, magnificent costumes and masks made by the theater’s own art department.

The circus feel of the festival will be maintained by Cirque Fusion from France, a troupe that combines elegant and expressive choreography with spectacular acrobatics. Their Triskel show is a surrealist trip across the myths and magical legends of the ancient Celts, told through acrobatics and dance.

The Warsaw Voice is a media partner of the event.
