North Mississippi Allstars

The North Mississippi Allstars are variously classified as roots, southern rock, blues, and blues rock. Paradoxically, any attempt to classify their music along these lines is bound to hit the mark. The NMA is one of the very few outfits that seriously attempt to weave all these strands together. The NMA were formed in Hernando, Mississippi, in 1996. These were good years for these genres of music in the U.S. The highly successful comeback of the Allman Brothers Band paved the way for similar acts to follow. Hot on the tracks of Warren Haynes’ Gov’t Mule, Blues Traveler served notice that the blues was the news—at least in the U.S.

The North Mississippi Allstars was founded by singer and guitarist Luther Dickinson, his brother Cody (drums and keyboards) and drummer Chris Chew. Their debut album, Shake Hands With Shorty (2000) was a huge seller and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. By now, they were becoming more popular by the day. Their originality and charisma is strongly in evidence on The Word (2001), a blues gospel album they made with Robert Randolph and John Medeski. Three of their next four albums were nominated for Grammys. The more straight ahead rock effort Polaris (2003) came as something of a surprise. “We wanted to try our hand at a slightly different style,” says Luther Dickinson.

Hernando (2008) is the band’s most stylish album and marks a noticeable return to their roots. Their double live album Do It Like We Used To (Live 96-08) (2009), shows this inimitable band to their absolute best effect.

Their latest offering, Keys To The Kingdom, which came out Feb. 1 this year, made the NMA a top blues act.

The North Mississippi Allstars Duo are coming to Poland in July. Alvin Youngblood Hart, another big name in American blues, will be performing with them. Youngblood’s CV includes stints with Johnny Winter, Mick Taylor, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton and the Allman Brothers.
