The town of Ryn in the Mazury Lake District, a popular summer vacation destination in northeastern Poland, will host the first Mazury Film Festival Aug. 10-12, featuring ambitious films from Poland, Spain, Slovakia and Columbia.

The festival will open with British director Steve McQueen’s film Hunger from 2008. The festival will focus on titles which have not been released in Poland, such as a Spanish comedy entitled Bienvenido, Mr. Marshall; Slovak comedy-drama Kristove Roky (Crucial Years); Pjevajte nesto ljubavno (Play Me a Love Song) from Croatia; and Crónica de la muerte anunciada (Chronicle of a Death Foretold), a Colombian adaptation of one of the most famous novels by Gabriela García Márquez.

The films will be introduced by experts and officials from diplomatic missions and foreign cultural institutions in Poland who will also moderate discussions on the films following the screenings.

The festival organizers, the Filmdependent association, will also show a selection of Polish movie classics, including Rysopis (Identification Marks: None), director Jerzy Skolimowski’s feature debut; Dreszcze (Shivers) by Wojciech Marczewski, which paints a dark picture of 1950s Poland; a dystopian vision of the future in (O-bi, O-ba—koniec cywilizacji (O-Bi, O-Ba—The End of Civilization); and Krzysztof Zanussi’s Camouflage (Barwy ochronne), a profound reflection on the human condition.

Polish directors will be on hand to discuss their work with audiences.

The festival screenings will take place at the £abêd¼ movie theater of the Ryn Culture Center and the Ryn Castle Hotel.
