Polish banks will need PLN 600M new capital - NBP stress tests

Banks with 12.5% of the Polish banking sector's total assets will likely require PLN 600 million in new capital in a baseline macro scenario fitting NBP's latest macro projections, a stress test report by the central bank showed.

In the event of a major macroeconomic shock, including GDP growth declining from 0.8% in 2013 to a 1.3% recession in 2015, banks with 23.7% of sector assets would require some PLN 4.5 billion in new capital, the test results show.

"The results of stress tests and the simulations of loss absorption capacity show that banks’ resilience to shocks is relatively high, and has even improved since the last edition of the report," authors wrote.

Given persistent uncertainty to the economic outlook banks should "continue to pursue a prudent dividend policy" to pad the capital buffer, especially true for systemic banks.
