This year’s A Puppet Is a Human Too International Festival of Puppet Theaters and Movie Animation for Adults in Warsaw will encompass 15 productions from nine countries, including Iran, Norway, Canada and Italy, along with movie screenings, puppet exhibitions and activities for children.

The idea of the festival was conceived in 2006 to defy the stereotype that puppet theater offers nothing for adults.

The festival, now in its seventh year, will see the Continuo Theater from the Czech Republic staging Neighbors, a play that asks questions about the collapse of societies and deteriorating interpersonal relations, with special focus on Czechs in 1943-1953. Poland’s Malabar Hotel theater will stage Louder!, an adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which deals with the aftermath of 9/11 as seen by a child. Because I Love You by the Skromlehjulet Figurteater from Norway explores love affairs going through a crisis. These and 12 other theater groups will compete for prizes worth a total of zl.40,000.

The festival will include screenings of animated movies. It will be the first opportunity for Polish audiences to see the directorial debut of Kevin McTurk, who was in charge of special effects for Hollywood blockbusters such as Jurassic Park, King Kong and The Aviator. McTurk’s film The Narrative of Victor Karloch is a Gothic story of an alchemist and ghost hunter who confronts supernatural forces.
