Voting for leader of governing party ends

Jaroslaw Gowin and Donald Tusk
Voting to choose the leader of Poland’s governing Civic Platform (PO) party ended at midnight last night. Jaroslaw Gowin, a conservative member of the centrist PO, is challenging Prime Minister Donald Tusk for the position of party chief.
The elections were open to all 42,000 PO members in a direct election. About 28% of party members voted online and a further 40-50% of PO members are expected to have sent in votes by mail.
The results of the election will be known Aug. 23 unless neither candidate gets an absolute majority in the first round. If a run-off is needed, the final results will be announced Oct. 11.
