BASF, the world’s largest supplier of chemical products for the car industry, has announced that its sales in the automotive sector in 2011 totaled 9.5 billion euros globally and spending on research and development linked to the car industry reached 200 million euros.

In 2020, there will be an estimated 1.2 billion vehicles around the world, which is almost 300 million more than last year, according to the company. This huge market will necessitate new solutions in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency. The value of the global market for chemical products for the car sector is predicted to increase from around 65 billion euros in 2011 to 110 billion euros in 2020.

The car industry is one of the most important sectors for BASF. The company believes that the amount of chemical products used in cars will increase as a result of automotive sector trends such as lower emissions, design innovations and increased safety. BASF provides car producers with products ranging from plastics, including polyurethane and foams, to paints, fuel additives, catalysts, battery components, dyes, coolants and brake fluids and chemicals for leather and fabrics.

Polyurethane for the car industry accounts for around 25 percent of BASF’s total sales of polyurethane. Part of that is produced in ¦rem near Poznań in western Poland.
