The Syrena Theater in Warsaw is celebrating its 65th anniversary with a new musical based on a Polish hit movie from over 30 years ago.

The new musical, Hallo Szpicbródka, is based on a comedy musical entitled Hallo Szpicbródka, czyli ostatni występ Króla Kasiarzy, which roughly translates as “Hello Mr. Pointed Beard, or the Last Heist by the King of Safe-Crackers.” Directed by Janusz Rzeszewski and Mieczysław Jahoda in the late 1970s, the movie was a major hit in Poland and several other countries and is known in English as Hello, Fred the Beard.

The plot involves a troubled revue theater called Czerwony Młyn (Red Mill, alluding to the Moulin Rouge in Paris) whose owner is short of cash to pay his employees. When the theater’s assets are about to be seized to repay its debts, an elegant engineer by the name of Fred Kampinos shows up and offers to help...

Adapted from the original film script, the production at the Syrena Theater is directed by Wojciech Kościelniak, who has won critical acclaim for making a unique contribution to musical theater.

Like the movie, the stage musical is set in prewar Warsaw, an era that evokes a sense of nostalgia in audiences. The fast-paced action, familiar hits and the sparkling dialogue make for a highly entertaining and enjoyable experience. The choreography is by Jarosław Staniek, with sets designed by Damian Styrna and costumes designed by Bożena Ślaga.

The main roles are played by Piotr Polk as Fred Kampinos, and Hanna Śleszyńska, Katarzyna Żak, Justyna Woźniak and Anna Terpiłowska.
