Opposition candidate wins Senate seat in Podkarpacie region

Poland's right-wing opposition party Law and Justice (PiS) saw its candidate Zdzislaw Pupa win the by-election to the Senate upper house in the Podkarpacie region, south-eastern Poland, securing nearly 61% of valid votes, according to the official results announced by the regional election committee on Monday.
The election turnout reached 15.84%. The candidate of the ruling coalition of the Civic Platform (PO) and Polish People's Party (PSL) Mariusz Kawa secured a mere 21% and Kazimierz Ziobro of the Solidary Poland got some 11%.
The election turnout was 15.84 percent.
The Senate by-election in Podkarpacie was called after to-date Senator Wladyslaw Ortyl (PiS) had been appointed the region's local assembly head.
