Art of Technology

Antonisz: Technology is an Art to Me, on display at the Zachęta National Gallery of Art, is a comprehensive exhibition exploring the work of Julian Józef Antoniszczak, known as Antonisz, a Polish animator, designer, musician and inventor.

One of the founders of the legendary Animated Movie Studio in Cracow, Antonisz was famous for his experimental animated films and surrealistic, humorous “animated documentaries.”

Although he was a prolific artist, his work is mostly unknown to wider audiences. The exhibition at the Zachęta gallery offers an insight into his work, including a chance to take a peek into his journals and “idea books” which he kept and grouped over several decades, filling them with notes, aphorisms, newspaper clippings and designs for machinery. Looking at these, visitors to the exhibition can watch how the creative process progressed from a scrap of paper with the first idea for a film or a device, through various construction phases and on to the final work.

Items on display include mechanical devices which Antonisz designed and built himself to make experimental animated films where instead of using a camera, images were placed directly on the film.
