Unnatural Nature
March 1, 2013
Nature’s Unnaturalness, a new exhibition at Warsaw’s Lookout Gallery, features work by accomplished photographer Maciej Stępiński, who also produces art installations, videos and paintings.
The exhibition consists of a series of photographs that have not been shown in public before and that are part of Stępiński’s Ph.D. dissertation.
Stępiński, born in 1972, is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles, France. His work has been shown at numerous individual and collective exhibitions in Poland and abroad, including in Marseilles, Toulouse, Paris, Los Angeles, New York City, Madrid, London and Montreal.
According to art critic Adam Mazur, everything in Stępiński’s pictures looks frozen and somewhat unfriendly. Mazur writes, “His perfect composition does not clash with the overall sense of disharmonious presentation. This tension is the distinctive feature of Maciej Stępiński’s series of photographs. His work can be described as an amazing documentary project or, to put it more accurately, a documentary project about the amazing.”
