Theater Against Racism

Obsession, a play staged by the Remus Theater Association and directed by Katarzyna Kazimierczuk, looks at discrimination from an unusual angle. Bringing together firsthand accounts from people who experienced racially motivated violence, the play juxtaposes their moving stories with the beauty of distant lands and cultures, expressed through music and choreography.

During the show, the actors perform traditional, polyphonic songs from such diverse corners of the world as Morocco, Uganda, Corsica, Italy, Brazil and the Balkans. They are accompanied by a group of foreign performers, including Persian flute virtuoso Mohammad Rasouli (Iran), Butoh dancer Rui Ishihara (Japan) and Hana Umeda, an actress who dances the traditional Nihon Buyo dance from Japan.

The title of the play refers to the personal story of Malik, a Moroccan artist who was brutally assaulted during a scholarship in Poland. “Ever since the incident (...) I keep nervously looking around, thinking someone could attack me,” Malik said. “It’s an obsession now.”

Obsession has been financed from public funds and the European Fund for the Integration of Third-Country Nationals.
