National Ballet Does the Bard
March 1, 2013
Article's tools:

The Polish National Ballet is planning a special repertoire this year in preparation for the 400th anniversary of the death of the great English poet and playwright William Shakespeare (1564-1616).

The cycle, inspired by the works of Shakespeare, opens at the Wielki Theater in Warsaw on March 15 with the premiere of the two-act ballet A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Many a choreographer has tackled this work but no one has come close to John Neumeier, the legendary American choreographer and longtime director of the Hamburg Ballet.

This engaging comedy of errors where real life crosses over into a fantasy world of elves is one of Neumeier’s most beautiful stage productions. He staged this version in Hamburg in 1977 and has since put it on in Paris, Vienna, Moscow, Copenhagen and Stockholm.

The action of the play is mirrored in the music as well as the choreography. The royal court dances to the romantic strains of Felix Mendelssohn, the elves are accompanied by the more modern sounds of György Ligeti, and the artisans move in time to an old-fashioned barrel organ.

£ukasz Borowicz is the musical director and the outstanding German artist Jurgen Rose is the stage designer.
