Fado Queen Mariza in Warsaw
March 1, 2013
Article's tools:

Fado singer Mariza is coming to Poland to give a concert May 27 in Warsaw.

Fado music, Portugal’s national treasure, is similar to Argentinian tango and Spanish flamenco in that it is all about emotions. Replete with passion, sadness, jealousy and regret, fado is both poetic and mysterious, combining such contradictory states of mind as immense pain with overwhelming joy and cruelty with passionate love.

Fado rose to prominence thanks to Lisbon Story, a movie by Wim Wenders which featured Mariza. It has since become almost a household name, but it largely owes its popularity to Mariza’s successful career and charismatic personality. After the singer teamed up with Sting on “A Thousand Years,” the official song of the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, fado became a fixture in the contemporary music landscape.

Mariza is a natural singer whose career has been nothing short of spectacular. When she first made it big, she was instantly compared to the legendary Amalia Rodriguez, the most famous fado performer in history. After becoming a success at home in Portugal, Mariza quickly won global acclaim. Mariza’s albums sell like hot cakes and keep winning prestigious awards. Mariza has performed at the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Sydney Opera and the Royal Albert Hall in London.
