Jewish Motifs in Film

The ninth Jewish Motifs International Film Festival takes place April 23-28 at Warsaw’s Muranów cinema. The event will focus on Jews, their tradition, identity and history.

Audiences will be able to watch films which deal with Jewish themes from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Russia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, Hungary as well as films from Western Europe and Israel. Viewers will have an opportunity to see a range of documentaries and feature films. After screenings, audiences will be able to meet the filmmakers. Some of the subjects tackled in the films will be discussed during debates on April 25 at 6 p.m. and on April 27 at 4 p.m. at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw. All screened films will compete for the Warsaw Phoenix award and cash prizes. Among the films selected for the competition are How To Re-Establish A Vodka Empire (Britain/Ukraine); Seven Minutes in the Warsaw Ghetto (Denmark); and Aftermath (Poland/Netherlands/Russia/Slovakia).

The award ceremony will take place on April 28 at the Muranów cinema.

The guest of honor of this year’s festival is Polish writer Józef Hen. A retrospective of films based on his novels will be shown during the festival. Viewers will be able to meet Hen April 27 at 7 p.m. at the Muranów cinema. Admission to all events except for the opening and closing ceremonies is free.
