Article's tools:

The 33rd Warsaw Theater Meetings festival will be held April 18-May 1, featuring a selection of the best plays staged recently in Polish theaters. All festival performances will be shown with English subtitles to help foreign audiences enjoy the event.

This year’s festival comprises a selection of 19 plays staged by different theaters across Poland and directed by some of Poland’s best theater directors, including Mikołaj Grabowski, Jan Klata, Paweł Łysak and Mariusz Grzegorzek.

Warsaw Theater Meetings audiences will be able to see productions by troupes including the Polski Theater in Wrocław and Zagłębie Theater in Sosnowiec, in addition to classic plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov and Sophocles. Some of the most promising events include The Queen’s Peacock, a provocative play based on the novel by Dorota Masłowska and staged by the Stary Theater in Cracow. Theater fans should also see Songs of Lear, a project that combines a play with an oratorio and features songs inspired by Shakespeare’s King Lear. Staged by the Song of the Goat Theater from Wrocław, Songs of Lear won three prestigious awards at last year’s Fringe Festival in Edinburgh.

Alongside plays for adult viewers, the festival program comprises Little Warsaw Theater Meetings with theatrical performances for children.

The Warsaw Theater Meetings are one of the oldest theater festivals in Poland, held for the first time in 1965. After an eight-year hiatus, the festival was relaunched in 2008 and became immensely popular again.

This year’s festival venues are the Dramatyczny, Studio and Polski theaters. The event is organized by the Dramatyczny Theater, Warsaw City Hall and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
