Polish liberal Palikot Movement turns into new party
October 7, 2013
Twoj Ruch (Your Move) is the name of a new political grouping that evolved from the Palikot Movement (RP), a Polish liberal party with parliamentary representation, RP leader Janusz Palikot said at a founding congress of the new party on Sunday.
The new party will be composed, apart from the RP, of several partners, including the Europa Plus movement led by former Democratice Left Alliance (SLD) member Marek Siwiec and a number of left fringe parties. Siwiec will be Your Move's deputy leader.
Sejm lower house deputy speaker Wanda Nowicka, a former RP member, said that she would cooperate with Palikot's new party in the parliament.
“We need this change now,” Palikot said as Poland was facing a "gigantic challenge" and an unrepeatable opportunity and maybe the last chance to make a developmental and technological leap due to the PLN 300 billion in EU funds allocated to Poland for years 2014-2020. These funds need to be spent on "modern jobs" and the development of knowledge economy, he said.
Palikot also said that the new party was set to create a five-year development plan for the Polish economy. He talked about the necessary investment into biotechnology and farm processing,
He pointed to the need to abolish ZUS social insurance board and create a new pension system.
According to Palikot neither PM Donald Tusk nor the main opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski nor the leader of SLD Leszek Miller will be able to make these changes.
“Only those gathered here can make them," Palikot said.
