Black Hawks for Colombia
April 25, 2013
Article's tools:

The Colombian armed forces have taken delivery of five modern S-70i Black Hawk multi-purpose helicopters manufactured by PZL Mielec in southeastern Poland.

Colombia is the first country in South America to have acquired helicopters from the Sikorsky Aircraft company, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp, which owns PZL Mielec.

The S-70i, manufactured exclusively in the city of Mielec, is the latest model of the Black Hawk helicopter. It can transport people and equipment and perform special military tasks and combat and rescue operations. Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Mexico have already bought such machines. Apart from manufacturing helicopters, PZL Mielec is Sikorsky Aircraft’s key supplier of components for helicopters made for the American armed forces.

So far PZL Mielec has manufactured more than 20 S-70i Black Hawks. Non-standard equipment, adapted for use by the Colombian special forces, was added in the United States. PZL Mielec also offers similar services. The company adapted the helicopters for Saudi Arabia to the country’s specifications.

The S-70i Black Hawk helicopters sold to international armed forces and government agencies directly by Sikorsky Aircraft have the same power and lifting capacity as the UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters used by the American military. The S-70i can be adapted to specific requirements, for example by providing them with radar, ballistic protection equipment, medical equipment, enlarged fuel tanks, an external rescue hoist system and a cargo hoist system.
