Friends with Death

Article's tools:

Romantics, a play by Israeli dramatist Hanoch Levin exploring the subject of death, will have its Polish premiere May 10 at the Dramatyczny Theater in Warsaw.

Dying is an important, recurring theme in many plays by Levin (1943-1999). As a child, Levin lost his father. As he battled severe disease in his later years, Levin began to study and describe the entire process of dying, complete with the fear of falling into oblivion and your losing loved ones. Levin’s plays strip death of its pathos, turns it into something commonplace and familiar, so that it somehow becomes a less terrifying prospect.

The dramatist’s tragic-comic style—embellished with surprising figures of speech and imagery that saddens and amuses audiences at the same time—makes the painful and difficult subject lighter when depicted on stage. For the protagonists in Levin’s plays, death is a natural part of their lives.

The cast at the Dramatyczny Theater include Polish actors Małgorzata Niemirska, Władysław Kowalski and Zdzisław Wardejn.

Upcoming performances May 10, 11, 12 and 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Dramatyczny Theater, Palace of Culture and Science, 1 Defilad Sq.
