Europa Plus—A New Center-Left Party?

Former president Aleksander Kwaśniewski and Janusz Palikot, head of the opposition Palikot Movement party, have announced they are setting up a new center-left coalition called Europa Plus that will field candidates in next year’s European Parliament elections.

“Europa Plus is up and running, is getting stronger... and will run in the elections to the European Parliament in May 2014 and, perhaps, the elections after that,” Kwaśniewski said.

He added that Europa Plus was an “open” movement, comments that were aimed at the opposition Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) party with which, Kwaśniewski said, he had “emotional and historical ties.”

But SLD leader Leszek Miller said he would not take part in any meeting attended by Palikot, a flamboyant politician with a taste for controversial remarks, with whom he has had a series of public spats.

SLD Secretary General Krzysztof Gawkowski said, “The SLD is not going to meet with Janusz Palikot during any individual meetings, unofficial meetings or open meetings, because each of those could later result in irresponsible statements from Palikot.” He ruled out any chance of the SLD joining the Europa Plus project.
