Expect the Unexpected
May 28, 2013
Article's tools:

Australian cinematographer Marcus Struzina, who came to Warsaw to film Bunny, a full-length feature movie to be released later this year in English with Polish subtitles, chats to Jolanta Wolska.

Why did you choose to shoot the film in Warsaw?
There is an interesting tension and atmosphere in Warsaw. There are a lot of unexpected treasures here. We had a great time shooting the film in the streets of Warsaw. And there seem to be fewer enforced restrictions or expensive permits needed to film compared to Australia.

Did you consider filming in other Polish cities?
I prefer Warsaw to other Polish cities because I feel there is more freedom to be yourself and a greater range of things that can happen here. Sometimes it’s a cautious city and other days adventurous. Expect the unexpected. I really like Warsaw. It is international enough and fully functional like any contemporary European city but with a fascinating sometimes grungy Eastern European past.

Was it hard to work with people here?
There is this feeling here that people live and let live. Although sometimes it’s hard to tell if it is indifference or polite behavior. Mostly Poles are either very accepting of what you are doing, or they just ignore you and let you get on with your business.

What sort of vibe do you get in Warsaw?
There seems to be a collective memory around things being difficult. I imagine that when you start from nothing, like after World War II, when everything in the city was destroyed, it gives you a greater appreciation of contemporary comfort and security. I feel that’s why in Warsaw everything seems possible, and why Poles seem to work hard but remember to have fun.
