Headlines Unleash the Imagination

Daily News—Warsaw, a new exhibition at the Zachęta Project Room, features collages and drawings by Polish visual artist Basia Bańda.

Working on her project, Bańda was inspired by news headlines from the Warsaw section of the Gazeta.pl website. The succinct descriptions of less and more important events taking place in the Polish capital prompted Bańda to create a subjective portrait of Warsaw as seen from a distance. Working from her hometown of Zielona Góra in southwestern Poland, Bańda deliberately stopped at just the headlines which, in theory at least, are meant to convey the essence of the stories behind them. Bańda never delved into the stories themselves, using the headlines to unleash her visual imagination.

Using yellowed paper to give them a vintage feel, the Daily News—Warsaw pictures consist of “lost and found” components such as reproductions of old paintings, book illustrations and photographs along with Bańda’s own drawings. The exhibited items resemble old prints, sketches, comic books and graffiti.
