Kafka and Life’s Tough Choices
May 28, 2013
Article's tools:

Warsaw’s Jewish Theater is staging Kafka Dances, a play by Australian Timothy Daly, inspired by letters which Franz Kafka wrote to Felice Bauer during a short, stormy love affair.

Working on the play, Daly was interested in the conflict between ordinary life and art. The play tells the story of an author trying to learn to live, but who faces a tough choice between his writing career and the hardships of everyday life.

What at first seems a biographical play turns out to be a far more universal drama. The story of the love affair between Kafka, a Prague-based insurance clerk, and a female office worker from Berlin is told alongside that of Kafka’s inner transformation triggered by a lively touring Jewish theatrical troupe from Warsaw.

Watching the actors at work, Kafka tries to learn to act on stage, intending to use his newly acquired skills in his own life and relations with his family and fiancée. Easier said than done, the process sees Kafka’s dreams turn to nightmares and the protagonist realizes life is governed by uncompromising rules. Kafka needs to choose between love and creative endeavor, between stability and a career, between common sense and his inner calling.

The play is directed by Lech Mackiewicz. Kafka is played by Piotr Sierecki and Felice by Małgorzata Trybalska.
