A new production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, one of the most frequently staged plays of all time, will be staged at the Powszechny Theater in Warsaw.

The new version of the world’s most famous tragic love story is directed by Grażyna Kania, who has the young protagonists struggle with present-day problems. Is there a place for true love in their lives or is it just another commodity?

The combination of a modern setting with a classic story shows how universal the Shakespeare play is. The new staging prompts audiences to ask themselves about the rules that govern the emotions and lives of contemporary people. Can you still die of love and does love even exist in the consumerist world of today? The story of two tragic lovers from Verona becomes a tale of contemporary people coping with loneliness, neuroses and engaged in a desperate pursuit of happiness.

May 31, 7 p.m. (premiere); June 2, 7 p.m.; June 4, 7 p.m.
Powszechny Theater; 20 Jana Zamoyskiego St.
