Concerts by John Zorn, Paco de Lucia and Wayne Shorter are among the highlights of this year’s Warsaw Summer Jazz Days festival to be held July 15-19.

The event will feature a host of famous jazz performers, in addition to a long list of innovative and trend-setting musicians. Apart from concerts by Zorn and de Lucia at the Kongresowa Hall, Warsaw Summer Jazz Days audiences will hear the Wayne Shorter Quartet and the Sun Ra Arkestra at the Soho Factory and a number of other avant-garde jazz musicians from both Poland and abroad.

Zorn, who turns 60 July 15, will be celebrating the big day in Warsaw, sharing the stage with a posse of outstanding musicians, including vocalist Mike Patton, guitarist Marc Ribot and pianist John Medeski. Divided into several parts, the concert promises to be a four-hour retrospective of Zorn’s greatest music achievements to date.

According to Mariusz Adamiak, the originator and organizer of Warsaw Summer Jazz Days, Zorn’s birthday concert is the most expensive project in the festival’s 22-year history. “A total of 22 musicians will appear on stage, forming seven different bands,” Adamiak said.

On July 16, festival audiences will hear Paco de Lucia, a flamenco guitarist who rose to international prominence with an inventive style that marked a bold departure from classic flamenco. De Lucia will be accompanied by his band, a dancer and a flamenco singer. The day’s other events include a concert by the Marcin Olak quartet and a solo set by double-bass player Renaud Garcia-Fons.

The next day of the festival will feature Poland’s Power of the Horns ensemble and Marshall Allen’s Sun Ra Arkestra. Both acts will play at the Soho Factory. Festival audiences will also see Tie Break, a music project by Antoni Ziut Gralak and Janusz Yanina Iwański.

On July 18, the main star of the festival will be composer Wayne Shorter, a former member of the Miles Davis Quintet and a founding member of the Weather Report group. Shorter, who turns 80 in August, is coming to Warsaw with his own quartet, featuring Danilo Péres on the piano, John Patitucci on the double-bass, Brian Blade on the drums, and Shorter himself on the sax.

The festival will close July 19 with concerts by the Andrea Marcelli Trio and the Antonio Sanchez Quartet, two bands fronted by charismatic drummers. Poland’s Jerzy Mazzoll, a prominent figure on the local yass music scene, will give a joint performance with trumpet virtuoso Zdzisław Piernik.
