The Winter Tale to premiere at Collegium Nobilium
October 28, 2013
All students of the 4th year at the Theater Academy in Warsaw will perform in their diploma play - The Winter Tale by William Shakespeare, which will premiere on the stage of the Collegium Nobilium Theater on October 29.
Cezary Morawski, the director of the play and the tutor of the 4th year said that one of the reasons to choose this play for diploma was it gave all the 22 students a chance to appear together on one stage.
Morawski also decided to put this play on stage as it features so many versatile elements – tragedy, farce, comedy, dance, singing and fighting.
Morawski’s staging of The Winter Tale focuses on the question of how jealousy can turn into obsession and devastate people’s lives.
The Winter Tale is a story of loss and redemption. The first three acts are filled with intense psychological drama. In a fit of wild and unfounded jealousy, Leontes, the King of Sicily, convinces himself that his pregnant wife is carrying his best friend’s love child. Leontes’s jealousy turns to tyranny as the king proceeds to destroy his entire family and a lifelong friendship.
Sixteen long years pass, and we witness one of the most astonishing happy ending - the kind of restorative ending typical of Shakespeare’s “comedies.
