Warsaw Tests Chinese Electric Bus

Warsaw’s municipal bus company Miejskie Zakłady Autobusowe has tested out an electric bus from Chinese company BYD (Build Your Dreams).

The bus is environmentally friendly, comfortable for passengers and economical. It is quiet and emissions-free. The cost of operating the BYD K9 model is about zl.50 per 100 kilometers, four times less than a conventional bus with a diesel engine. A single BYD K9 electric bus that notches up around 150 km a day in mileage can generate more than zl.80,000 in annual savings for a carrier.

The bus can travel more than 300 km before it needs to be recharged. In addition, the test-drives in Warsaw showed that the bus can run for more than 250 km in an urban environment with the air-conditioning switched on all the time. That is a record for an electric bus. Recharging time depends on the charger used. The batteries of the test-drive unit took three hours to be recharged at a depot.

In the first quarter of this year, the BYD K9 was approved for use across the European Union. This allowed the Chinese producer to start official sales on European markets. The first EU countries where the BYD electric bus is in regular use are the Netherlands (six buses) and Italy (two buses in Milan). The Chinese have also received their first orders from Israel and Turkey. They have begun building a factory for their BYD electric buses in the United States, with the output primarily destined for the North American market.
