American Rob Clearfield, a pianist who plays both classical music and jazz as well as rock, chats to Jolanta Wolska.

What brings you to Warsaw?
I came for a brief moment to give a couple of concerts with Grażyna Augu¶cik, who spends much of her time in America.

What are your first impressions of Warsaw?
I love it, particularly the Old Town. The buildings are great—you can’t see that in the U.S. There is great energy in this town and lots of history.

What do you think of the Chopin Museum?
I was moved to see Chopin’s original manuscripts. It is in fact energizing to see how bad Chopin’s handwriting was, that there was a process in the way he wrote music. It is not that he wasn’t a genius, but it was great to see that he worked so hard to achieve his perfection. That is inspiring.

What surprised you in Warsaw?
I was struck by the diversity here and the number of tourists. I expected to see only Polish people in Warsaw. I had wondered how Western Warsaw would be, whether it would be more like Germany or Ukraine. It is really nice, modern and cool. There is a lot of positive energy with so much going on here.

What do you think of the food?
The diversity of restaurants is phenomenal. There are Greek restaurants, Italian, Moroccan... you name it and it seems to be here. And the food is really good. Also, I love Polish dark rye bread and all the sausages.
