Poland’s first comprehensive presentation of works by outstanding contemporary German artist Christian Jankowski is on show at the Center for Contemporary Art at Warsaw’s Ujazdowski Castle. The exhibition is a retrospective of the artist’s work from 1992 to 2012.

Jankowski is regarded as one of the most interesting contemporary post-conceptual artists in Europe. In his work, he examines the role of an artist and art in contemporary society. His diverse range of artistic media includes video projects, installations, photographs and objects.

The Warsaw exhibition includes a recent project by Jankowski entitled Heavyweight History. The project, undertaken specifically with the Warsaw exhibition in mind, combines art, history and sports in an attempt to explore the functioning of public space and the symbolism of historic monuments and landmarks. The project involved an artistic event in which Jankowski asked a group of weightlifters to flex their muscles and physically lift some of Warsaw’s monuments off their pedestals. The aim was to establish a dialogue between contemporary art and history.

After being shown in Warsaw, the Heavyweight History project, in the form of a film and a series of large-format photos depicting the weightlifters heaving Warsaw’s historic monuments, will tour venues abroad including the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, Germany, and the Center for Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv, Israel.
