Theater school students from 15 countries will stage 20 performances during the seventh ITSelF International Theater School Festival in Warsaw June 28-July 2.

This year’s festival venues are the Collegium Nobilium Theater, the Narodowy Theater, the Imka Theater, the Studio Theater, and the Theater Institute. All plays and performances will have English subtitles.

The festival will open with a play entitled The Movie, directed by Andrzej Strzelecki. Other plays which Warsaw audiences will see this year include The Possibilities by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow; Damn Devil by the Theater Academy in Shanghai; and Passing the Love of a Woman staged by students of the Yoram Loewenstein Acting School in Tel Aviv.

Ever since the festival was held for the first time, it has always featured a play staged by the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw, which is the organizer of the event. This year, the play is The Nights of the Brontë Sisters directed by Bo¿ena Suchocka. Students from the Polish National Film, Television and Theater School in £ód¼ will perform Shopping and F***ing, a controversial 1996 play by British playwright Mark Ravenhill—directed by Grzegorz Wi¶niewski.

This year’s festival judges are Polish film and television director Ryszard Bugajski; Italian actor, director and playwright Claudio de Maglio, who is the director of Civica d’Arte Drammatica; Portuguese playwright and translator José Maria Vieira Mendes; Spanish actor, stage writer and director Andrés Lima, who is the founder of the Compania Riesgo theater troupe and a founding member of another troupe called Animalario; and Yang ChyiWen, a theater architecture expert in who in 2009-2012 was the dean of the Theater School at the Taipei National University of the Arts.

The festival will also comprise a series of workshops. The “Poetic Body” workshop will be conducted by Thomas Prattki, the founder of the London International School of Performing Arts and a specialist in dramatic expression. A workshop on comedia dell’arte will be conducted by de Maglio, and students from Cuba will host African Cuban Folklore for Actors, a dance and acting workshop during which actors will play the role of saints in dance.

This year’s festival will also feature 13 radio plays directed by theater school students from around the world.

The ITSelF International Theater School Festival aims to stimulate and promote joint international projects by theater schools and institutions. Each festival is attended by around 6,000 viewers.
