Megafast Internet?
The European Commission and Japan have launched a research project called Strauss aiming to make the internet 5,000 times faster than the current average in Europe.

The team-up aims to increase internet speed from an average of 19.7 Mbps in Europe to 100 Gbps.

The Strauss project is one of six projects planned by the two partners in an attempt to redefine internet architecture to increase the efficiency of networks in carrying data.

The other five projects to be funded by the partnership address challenges including cyber security, network capacity, storage, high density data traffic and energy efficiency. The partnership will bring together the European Commission, the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication, the National Institute of ICT as well as European and Japanese technology companies, universities and R&D centers.

The team-up aims to prepare the world for what ICT and consulting companies say will be a major increase in the amount of data sent over the internet in the coming years. According to the European Commission, global internet data traffic volumes are expected to increase 12 times by 2018.


Pay TV in 1 Billion Homes by 2018?
One billion homes are expected to have access to cable television, satellite television, pay terrestrial television and Internet Protocol television (IPTV) worldwide by 2018, according to Dublin-based research firm Research and Markets. Last year, 772 million customers around the world had pay TV. This year the figure is expected to rise to 814 million. In five years, China will be the largest pay-TV market, Research and Markets says.


Bigger Chunk of License Fee for TV
The National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) expects that the license fee that all television and radio set owners are obligated to pay will generate zl.650 million in revenue for Poland’s public broadcasters next year. Unlike in previous years, most of this money will go to the public television broadcaster Telewizja Polska (TVP), while radio broadcaster Polskie Radio will get less than before, the National Broadcasting Council said.

The KRRiT’s license fee revenue forecast for 2014 is based on the amount of license fee revenue expected to be generated in 2013. Following a June decision by the National Broadcasting Council, 54.46 percent of the 2014 license fee revenue will go to TVP. This marks a change from previous years when TVP’s share of the license fee revenue ranged from 44 percent to 45 percent. In 2013, it stands at 44.89 percent.

TVP CEO Juliusz Braun urged the National Broadcasting Council to grant a bigger chunk of license fee revenue to TVP, in a letter to the council’s chairman, Jan Dworak, in November last year. Braun argued at the time that television broadcasting requires far greater spending than running a radio station, and that the costs of TVP’s public service mission are four times greater than those of the public radio broadcaster.

Polskie Radio will grab a smaller piece of the pie next year. Its share of the 2013 license fee revenue is 29 percent, while in 2014 it will only be eligible for 24.31 percent.

Meanwhile, the witualnemedia.pl website has quoted Polskie Radio’s press spokesman Radosław Kazimierski as saying that “Polskie Radio is the most mission-oriented broadcaster in Poland which... provides top-quality programming in a varied form. However, we are able to do that primarily thanks to license fees. Looking to attract more advertisers would mean that our programming would gradually become more commercial, which would undermine the very essence of the public media.”

Regional radio broadcasters will also get a smaller piece of the pie next year: 21.23 percent of total license fee revenue, down from 25 percent this year.


New Trade Magazines Hit the Market
The 6 Media advertising agency is launching two new trade monthly magazines in September, focusing on dentistry and veterinary medicine: Stomatologia. Sztuka - praktyka – rzemiosło and Weterynaria. Sztuka - praktyka – rzemiosło.

The magazines will deal with the clinical aspects of dentistry and veterinary medicine and will also describe the latest trends in these fields and run reports on new technology. They will also provide advice on business practice related to dentistry and veterinary medicine, and report on interesting case studies from dental and veterinary clinics.


Avanti for iPad
Media group Agora has released a version of its Avanti shopping magazine for iPad users. It offers access to videos from photo shoots, interactive galleries and additional content.

Readers of Avanti for the iPad can enjoy special interactive applications such as a makeup studio—a program that allows the reader to apply digital makeup to a virtual model and then send a list of the cosmetics they chose to an e-mail address.

Avanti magazine for the iPad has a menu with an option to view the whole issue, adjust the font size and enlarge images. The application also shows the latest entries from the Avanti fanpage on Facebook.

The magazine’s iPad application has been created by a team of experts at Agora.


Radio Zet Gold Replaces Planeta FM
At the end of June, a new radio network called Radio Zet Gold went on the air, replacing Planeta FM, which is now only available via the internet. The new radio station, part of the Eurozet radio group, says it targets a mature audience.

The new network comprises 14 local stations formerly run by Planeta FM as well as Radio Plus Toruń and Wrocław’s Radio Traffic FM, which the Eurozet radio group bought in April.

Radio Zet Gold broadcasts hits spanning the last few decades, including hits by the likes of Charles Aznavour, Dalida, Romina Power & Al Bano, Ricchie Poveri, and Eruption.

On weekdays between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., a local program called “Zawsze wielkie przeboje na dzień dobry” (Always Great Hits to Start Your Day) is broadcast on Radio Zet Gold, hosted by journalists from the former Planeta FM stations. Then, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Radio Zet Gold network airs “Radio Zet Gold. Zawsze wielkie przeboje” (Radio Zet Gold: Always Great Hits). Between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. there is a program called “Przebojem po okolicy” (Neighborhood Hits), followed by “Moje przeboje!” (My Hits!) from 6 p.m., and “Noc w Radiu Zet Gold” (Night on Radio Zet Gold) from midnight.

The Planeta FM station continues to exist as an online station available at the planeta.fm website.
