Promoting New Zealand Food

A group of Polish chefs and other guests were treated to a selection of dishes from New Zealand at a recent event at the New Zealand embassy in Warsaw designed to promote food products from that country. The dishes were prepared by Polish chef Ilona Zdziech, who visited New Zealand a few years ago and fell in love with the country and its cuisine—so much so that she decided to write a cookbook on New Zealand food for Polish consumers.

The beautifully produced and illustrated album, entitled Kuchnia Nowej Zelandii, not only has some unusual recipes, such as passion-fruit jam or “kiwifruit snow,” but also acts as an alternative tourist guide to New Zealand. The book, with over 90 classic “Kiwi” recipes, includes an introduction by celebrated New Zealand chef Peter Gordon.

While addressing the visitors, the New Zealand ambassador to Poland, Wendy Hinton, said she was delighted to be able to promote her country’s cuisine in Warsaw. She added that there were many opportunities for trade between New Zealand and Poland, particularly in the export of meat, fish, fruit, avocado oil, honey and wine by the former.

Dave Harrison from the New Zealand Meat Board said New Zealand’s prime lamb cuts, Wagyu beef and deer are already available on the Polish market.

Zdziech said that, while imports to Poland are still very small, this should change with the search for GMO-free and unpolluted food products from New Zealand. Zdziech added that she has just launched her own company to import and sell food products from New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific.
