Connect With Your Inner Artist

Article's tools:

If you live in Warsaw and want to connect with your inner artist, the Atelier Foundation offers help and inspiration.

Housed in the historic Artistic Town House at 11 Foksal St., the Atelier Foundation was established in 1991 by painter and graphic artist Andrzej Bielawski and painter and photographer Teresa Starzec. The two decided to start an organization to promote education in the arts after art classes for children were largely dropped from Polish schools in the early 1990s. The foundation’s first students were high school graduates getting ready to enter fine arts academies. Bielawski and Starzec taught drawing and painting in their private studio. During summer vacations, the artists took their students on outdoor painting classes near Warsaw.

Year by year, the classes grew increasingly popular. In 2002, the Atelier Foundation moved into the house on Foksal Street, which had enough room for several art studios. The foundation was able to start teaching classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, composition, art history and graphic design to children and adolescents as well as adults.

Today, the foundation’s classes are attended by two-year-olds with their parents, teenagers, adults and senior citizens. The students are divided into age groups and proficiency levels. Taught by working and accomplished artists, the classes also prepare high school graduates for studies at fine arts academies. Atelier Foundation students enter academies in Warsaw, Poznań, ŁódĽ, London, Amsterdam and New York.

Whether you are a budding artist or just want to take your doodling to the next level, the Atelier Foundation welcomes all those who are keen to learn to draw, paint and sculpt. The foundation also organizes outdoor painting sessions in summer and winter.

Along with its teaching activities, the foundation organizes book launches, movie screenings and art exhibitions in its Atelier Foundation Gallery. Once every two years, the foundation joins forces with other cultural organizations to hold the Art Festival on Foksal Street.
