Challenging Prejudices About Cancer

Oswajamy Raka (Taming Cancer) is the title of a campaign aiming to tackle prejudices about cancer.

Among those taking part in the campaign are the Rak’n’Roll Foundation (rak is Polish for cancer), the Chustka (Headscarf) Foundation and the Dramatyczny Theater in Warsaw. As part of the project, the Dramatyczny Theater is staging a play entitled Gry ekstremalne (Extreme Games) by Ewa Gawlikowska-Wolff and Elżbieta Chowaniec, based on the story of a young girl who died from a brain tumor.

The play is accompanied by a photographic exhibition entitled Pięknołyse (The Bald and Beautiful) and put together by the Rak’n’Roll Foundation. Depicting beautiful women undergoing chemotherapy, the photographs prove that even though cancer tries to rob the women of their femininity, it does not necessarily have to succeed. The portraits are the work of photographers Katarzyna Fortuna, Daria Matczuk and Andrzej ¦wietlik.

The exhibition is on show until Nov. 10 in the foyer of the Scena na Woli branch of the Dramatyczny Theater (22 Kasprzaka St., Warsaw). It is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and before performances. In mid-November, the exhibition will be moved to the foyer of the theater’s G. Holoubek branch in the Palace of Culture and Science (1 Defilad Sq.).

Admission to the exhibition is free.
