Former presidents and luminaries from around the world including the Dalai Lama and Hollywood actress Sharon Stone flocked to Warsaw for the 13th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates.

This year’s get-together of Nobel Peace Prize winners was held Oct. 21-23 in Warsaw, an event attended by several thousand people. The summit guests included Polish ex-president and former Solidarity trade union leader Lech Wałęsa, the Dalai Lama, former South African president F.W. de Klerk, Iranian lawyer Shirin Ebadi, Irish peace activists Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan-Maguire, and members of Nobel Peace Prize-winning organizations. The special guest of the summit was social activist Samia Nkrumah, who is the daughter of the first president of Ghana.

During official sessions, the attendees discussed peace, democracy and human rights issues. The topics were later followed up on in afternoon workshops for young people, held as part of the Civil Academy project organized by the Lech Wałęsa Institute.

Since 1999, a committee made up of Nobel Peace Prize winners has presented a Peace Summit Award to celebrities for outstanding efforts to address the problems of the modern world. This year’s award went to American actress Sharon Stone for bringing “solidarity and new hope to the millions of people who have fought and are fighting against the tragedy of HIV/AIDS.”

The next World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates will take place in Cape Town, South Africa.
