LNG Terminal Delayed

Poland’s natural gas transmission system operator Gaz-System has delayed the launch of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal under construction in the Baltic port of Świnoujście in northwestern Poland. The project will be completed six months later than originally planned.

This is after the company responsible for the construction project, Polskie LNG, a subsidiary of Gaz-System, signed an annex to a contract with a consortium comprising the Saipem, Techint and PBG construction groups, moving the deadline to the end of December next year. The original deadline was six months earlier.

The annex also increased the scope of the project and the value of the contract by 67.5 million euros to zl.2.4 billion.

The deadline was postponed due to last year’s crisis in Poland’s construction industry, in particular financial difficulties experienced by the key subcontractor, Hydrobudowa Poland. Last year was when the biggest delay took place in the construction project.

Under a 20-year agreement between the Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG) and Qatar’s Qatargas corporation, 1.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas will reach the Świnoujście terminal every year. Poland consumes about 15 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
