Economical Driving Contest

Just how little fuel can you burn when you drive a delivery van? As little as 2.6 l/100 km—at least if you drive a Mercedes Citan and go easy on the gas pedal. This sounds improbable but such an impressive fuel economy level was indeed achieved by the winner of this year’s Grand Prix Mercedes-Benz Van Economy competition held in Poland.

The competition began in the summer and ended in October, attracting nearly 700 delivery van drivers from across the country.

In the first stage of the competition, contestants were expected to achieve the best possible level of fuel economy while driving a Mercedes-Benz Citan 109 CDI van fitted with a 90hp engine on a designated route near where they live. The contestants with the best gas mileage achieved in this preliminary stage were then invited to Warka, 60 km south of Warsaw, where the competition finals took place Oct. 23. The drive was on a 50-kilometer route that passed both through urban areas and outside built-up areas. The contestants achieved an incredibly low fuel consumption level of around 3 liters per 100 kilometers on average. The winning driver finished with an impressive reading of 2.6 l/100 km. Two contestants tied for second place with 2.8 l/100 km. The driver with the better time was named the runner-up. The winner of the competition, in addition to being named Champion of Economical Driving, received a year’s supply of fuel worth zl.18,000.

During last year’s Grand Prix Mercedes-Benz Van Economy competition, contestants drove the Mercedes-Benz Vito 116 CDI. The best result was 3.3 l/100 km.
