Canadian theater producer and agent Colin Rivers chats with Jolanta Wolska.

What brings you to Warsaw?
I traveled with my client, playwright Michele Riml, to see her play [Sexy Laundry, staged in Poland under the title Seks dla Odpornych]. She wrote it nine years ago and it has been performed in several countries, including Canada and the U.S. It has been performed at the Polonia Theater in Warsaw since 2012 to great success, both popular and critical. So we thought it would be nice to see it here.

Did you like it?
Even though neither of us understands Polish, we both thought that this version, along with the original Vancouver production, was the absolute best directed and performed one that we have seen anywhere. And there have been many productions. The actors, Dorota Kolak and Mirosław Baka, were fantastic—their performances were so genuine, sincere and organic. Also, the audience’s reaction was so much fun to experience—it was a fantastic audience. There was a full house and they loved the show!

What do you think of Warsaw?
It is a very livable city. I was impressed with the mix of old and new architecture. I like the historic buildings, such as the Palace of Culture and Science and smaller, renovated palaces as well as the new Złota 44 residential tower by Libeskind. It’s wonderful to see that history is preserved alongside modernity and progress.

Is Warsaw a friendly city?
We have found people here are very welcoming of foreigners and are proud to share their city. And you never have a sense that you are being “targeted” as a tourist. Everyone here seems to be relaxed.
