New Gallery at Dramatyczny Theater
November 28, 2013
Article's tools:

The opening of a poster exhibition marked the launch of a new gallery at Warsaw’s Dramatyczny Theater Nov. 15.

The exhibition, entitled Tomaszewski at the Dramatyczny Theater, features work by Henryk Tomaszewski, one of Poland’s best poster designers, who is regarded as the father of what is known as the Polish school of posters.

A number of Tomaszewski’s now-legendary posters were designed for productions staged at the Dramatyczny Theater, such as Sophocles’ Oedipus the King directed by Ludwik René and starring Gustaw Holoubek (1961), William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar (1971), and The Marriage written by Witold Gombrowicz and directed by Jerzy Jarocki (1974). These and more are on show at the new gallery. Tomaszewski produced posters with a lyrical and painterly feel, spicing them up with a dose of free-spirited humor.

One of Tomaszewski’s posters advertised a 1961 production of Eugene Ionesco’s Rhinoceros. A new version of the play, directed by Artur Tyszkiewicz, opened at the Dramatyczny Theater Nov. 15.

The new gallery at the Dramatyczny Theater is planning to exhibit posters by other famous designers such as Jan M³odo¿eniec, Jan Lenica and Waldemar ¦wierzy. The Tomaszewski at the Dramatyczny Theater exhibition runs until Jan. 10.
