Aldona 13 Café in Warsaw’s Saska Kêpa neighborhood is an unusual venue in that it is only open on Sundays and run by children and volunteers.

Housed in a prewar villa, the café is a project by the St. John of Jerusalem Foundation, which operates out of the building. On weekdays, the villa is full of people, volunteers and donors working with the foundation. Every Sunday, the foundation, which helps disabled people and children from poor families and broken homes, opens the lounge and beautiful yard to passersby and the house transforms into the Aldona 13 Café. Visitors are given a warm welcome by the hosts, who lead them to the former living room, where a historic, but still operational stove towers over other vintage furniture, including a table and a piano. At Aldona 13 Café, you can have lunch and a delicious cake as well as hear a concert or take part in a workshop. The café also has Sunday matinees for kids.

Aldona 13 Café has a certain quality about it that makes you feel like spending a couple of hours there. Even if you drop by on your own, you will sooner or later make friends with the staff who are sure to take a seat at your table for a chat.

Apart from the café, the foundation’s child volunteers also run a bric-a-brac store with items donated by nearby residents. If they so wish, visitors are free to contribute as well. All proceeds from the café and the store go to the foundation.
