Two new plays being staged at Warsaw’s Kamienica Theater in December offer audiences a choice between hard-hitting social realism and fast-paced comedy.

We, Children from Banhof Zoo (Polish title: My, dzieci z dworca Zoo), directed by Giovanni Castellanos from Colombia, is a drama based on a nonfiction book of the same title by Kai Hermann and Horst Rieck, reporters with Germany’s Stern magazine. They conducted a string of interviews in the mid-1970s that revealed the shocking truth about the problems experienced by young people in Berlin. Left to their own devices without appropriate care and support, many hung around the Berlin Zoo train station, where they succumbed to poverty, alcoholism and drug addiction. The protagonist, Christiane F., was only 12 when she first smoked hash. She went on to become involved in LSD, heroin, theft and prostitution.

Rather than just drug addiction and its consequences, We, Children from Banhof Zoo is about the thin line between fun and tragedy. The play shows how helpless people are when confronted by a system where individuals are nothing but statistics.

Upcoming performance: Dec. 20, 3 p.m.
The Kamienica Theater also has something lighter in store. How the Other Half Loves (Polish title: Jak się kochaj± w niższych sferach) is a bedroom farce written by Alan Ayckbourn and directed by Grzegorz Chrapkiewicz, one of the best comedy directors in Warsaw. The new production boasts witty dialogue, a fast-paced plot with different events taking place at the same time, and a select cast of some of Poland’s most popular actors.
